What is Body Sugaring?

Body sugaring is a method of removing your unwanted body hair with a sugar paste. It is an ancient form of hair removal that originated in the Middle East.

If you want the most natural way to remove body hair, look to sugaring. The paste consists of only sugar, water, and lemon juice. There are no resins, additives, coloring, or fragrances added to this hair removal product. That’s why sugaring is a great option for sensitive skin.

Most importantly, it leaves your body smooth and hairless.

No sticks or muslin strips are used, unlike waxing. This means less waste in our landfills. Also, the sugar paste is biodegradable.

Why Sugaring is Better for You Than Waxing

Sugar paste will not burn your skin because it is kept just above room temperature. Then it is gently spread over your skin in the opposite direction of hair growth. Next, the paste is flicked off in the direction of growth (vs. waxing where hair is removed opposite the direction of growth)

Sugaring does not irritate your skin, leaving your pores and follicles healthier and clog-free.  Furthermore, the paste sticks only to your hair and not the skin.

Sugar paste is water soluble, and will not leave a sticky, follicle clogging residue like wax.

Body sugaring removes your hair more gently than waxing, leaving your skin and follicle less stressed.

Body sugaring is safe to perform on sensitive skin, spider & varicose veins.

Sugaring And What to Expect

Most clients say that sugaring hurts less than waxing. But it is not entirely pain-free. This is usually because your hair is fully developed, and there is an established hair root. If you experience discomfort, it is typically during your first appointment when your hair is still in this stage of growth.  Most clients agree that maintenance appointments are much less painful.  If you are sensitive to pain, it is safe to take ibuprofen before your appointment. Or consider using a topical numbing cream.

Ideal Hair Length for Sugaring

Your ideal hair length is approximately 1/4 inch long before sugaring.

  • When your hair is too short, the sugar paste may not be able to pick up the hair.

  • If it is too long, the paste may pull the hair during the application process, and be slightly uncomfortable.

If your hair is much longer than the recommended length, please trim hair before your appointment. If you need trimming at the time of your appointment, additional charges will apply.

Recommended Maintenance

If you keep regular maintenance appointments (3-4 weeks ideally, up to 8 weeks is acceptable), the removal process is less painful because the hair is not fully established.  Continued maintenance can also lead to less growth over time.

Sugaring Post Care at Home

Exfoliation helps reduce the occurrence of ingrown hairs. Therefore, exfoliate regularly between your sugaring appointments. Over time, dead skin builds up, blocking hair follicles. In turn, new, weak hairs have a hard time pushing to the surface. Exfoliation keeps the hair follicle free of buildup and debris, allowing new hairs to push through the skin with ease.

Also, it is important to shower immediately after exercising/sweating, to limit bacteria growth.

It is not recommended to exercise, swim, or perform any friction-causing activity immediately after a sugaring appointment.  The sugaring process will leave your hair follicles open and vulnerable to bacteria & irritation.  It is best to wait until the following day, when the follicles have calmed.

If you are in need of exfoliation products, SugarSmith provides many different retail options. We offer body wash, scrubs, and serums. During your appointment, we will consult with you to find the product that best fits your needs.

Sugaring While on Your Period

It is totally fine to get sugared while on your menstrual cycle.  We just ask that you use a fresh tampon or menstrual cup prior to your appointment (you’re welcome to use the restroom at the shop when you arrive to tend to this).  If using a tampon, any effort to tuck the string is appreciated.  However, it’s no problem if the string is visible- in that case, we may ask you to hold it out of the way during your sugaring session.

Some women experience a lower pain tolerance in the week or so surrounding their cycle.  If you feel that you are more sensitive to pain during that time, you may want to consider scheduling a little earlier or later in the month to avoid this issue.

Please note that cancellation due to your cycle arriving unexpectedly is subject to the normal cancellation policy.  See below for SugarSmith’s cancellation policy.

Cancellation Policy

Please remember that your appointment time is held for you and only you.  You are provided a courtesy reminder via email/text 2 days prior, giving you plenty of time to adjust your appointment if necessary.  SugarSmith requires 24 hour notice of any rescheduling or cancellation needs*.  Failure to provide adequate notice will result in a cancellation fee.  Fees are as follows:

  • Day of cancellation will incur a fee of 50% of the cost of your scheduled service.

  • Cancellation within the hour of your appointment, or no-call-no-show, will be charged the full amount of your scheduled service.

Female clients, please note: cancellation policy DOES apply if you are on your menstrual cycle, unexpectedly or otherwise. We understand that it may be uncomfortable for you during that time of the month, so if you would prefer not to get sugared during that time, please track your cycle to the best of your ability. Most of our clientele are female, so allowing fee-free cancellation would disrupt scheduling too frequently.

You will be unable to book your next appointment until any fees are paid.  Thanks for your understanding and cooperation in this matter!

*We realize, of course, that things out of our control happen.  Illness, accidents, etc. are justified reasons to miss an appointment, and you will not be charged in cases as such.  Any possible notice would be appreciated in these situations!
